Marking Armed Forces Week 2026 in Haddington

Heads bowed AFD 26

An annual ceremony to recognise the contribution and sacrifices of the Armed Forces community was held in Haddington on Monday, 22 June to mark Armed Forces Week.

More than 30 people, including veterans, serving personnel, cadets, elected members and members of the public attended a moving tribute outside the former Sherrif Court building with the Armed Forces Day flag flying proudly on the building’s roof.

Councillor Donna Collins was piper for the day, leading the group in a march to Court Street where speeches were made by the Lord-Lieutenant of East Lothian, Roderick Urquhart and East Lothian Provost, Councillor John McMillan before a moment of silent contemplation. The group then attended a small reception in the council’s offices.

Support for our Armed Forces

Armed Forces Week is celebrated across the United Kingdom each year and provides an opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets. It culminates with Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June.

Lord Lieutenant Roderick Urquhart said: "It was both important and heartening to see people come together to mark Armed Forces Week and to reflect on the contribution made by members of the Armed Forces community. Their service helps protect the freedoms and values we enjoy today, often involving considerable personal sacrifice.

"Events such as this provide an opportunity to recognise that commitment, and to thank all those who have served, and continue to serve our country, as well as their families who provide key support."

'Dedication, courage and professionalism'

East Lothian Provost Councillor John McMillan, who is also Armed Forces Champion, said: "Armed Forces Week is an important opportunity to recognise the dedication, courage and professionalism of those who serve, or who have served, in our Armed Forces. We are also reminded of the vital role played by military families and the wider Armed Forces community. It was a privilege to join colleagues, veterans, cadets and residents in Haddington to express our gratitude for their service and to reaffirm East Lothian's commitment to supporting them."
