Tutti Orchestra strikes a chord in Musselburgh
A community orchestra led by one of our woodwind instructors is due to perform at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe after a successful debut in 2025.
Music for everyone
Tutti Orchestra meets in Musselburgh every Thursday and is open to all ages and abilities. Some players have recently left school orchestras, while others are still members. Others have not played since leaving school more than 30 years ago.
Growing from strength to strength
Tutti began in 2018, the brainchild of Julie Robinson, one of our woodwind instructors. Julie progressed through East Lothian's school music programme before studying at Napier University and returning to the county to work
Julie said: “Members regularly speak about the enjoyment they get from playing together. The orchestra takes its name from the musical term 'tutti', which means everyone playing together. They also say that being part of the orchestra has a positive impact on their mental health.”
Under her leadership, the orchestra has grown into a thriving group of more than 30 musicians from East Lothian, Midlothian, Edinburgh and beyond. Several of our employees are members of the orchestra, including staff from the Instrumental Music Service, Employability and Community Protection teams.
Last year, the orchestra took part in its first Fringe concert at Canongate Kirk, where it entertained a large audience. Members have also performed at Musselburgh Gala, Musselburgh Area Partnership Communities Day and the Portobello Beach Busk. They have given concerts at venues in and around Musselburgh, as well as the Fraser Centre in Tranent.
Fringe concert returns
This year's Fringe concert takes place on Friday 14 August 2026 at 7.30pm at Canongate Kirk. Audience members can look forward to music from around the world, including European folk songs, K-pop classics and American swing. There will also be a special local touch for the finale.
Come and join in
Julie is keen to encourage new members and understands that many people may feel anxious about returning to an instrument after a long break. She said: “The orchestra provides a supportive environment to get started. There are no auditions and no overly difficult pieces. Learning is well paced and enjoyable. Why not come along and join in the music making?”
